Boost Your Immune System Naturally!

This year is shaping up to be a challenging one with flu outbreaks, a surge in Respiratory Syncytial Virus cases, and the usual cold season. As a holistic RN, I’ve relied on a simple, effective protocol for over 20 years to support my family’s health. Born out of necessity while caring for post-operative children, these multi-purpose products are free from the toxic ingredients often found in drugstore brands—and they remain staples in my household to this day.

Why Apply Essential Oils to Your Feet?

The soles of your feet are uniquely equipped to absorb essential oils quickly due to their large pores and absence of hair follicles. This allows the oils to enter the bloodstream efficiently, supporting:

  • A stronger immune system
  • Better sleep
  • Reduced stress and anxiety

Plus, with fewer layers of skin compared to other parts of your body, the feet are ideal for maximizing absorption.

 Elderberries: The Botanical Powerhouse

I love using elderberries as a go-to herbal remedy during the cooler months. These antioxidant-rich berries from the Sambucus nigra plant are both immune-boosting and delicious. My favorite way to use them is in this simple elderberry syrup.

While conventional medicine has its place, there’s little it can do for the common cold or mild flu. That’s where elderberries shine. Research shows they not only help prevent colds and flu but can also shorten recovery time and ease discomfort.

Packed with vitamins A, B, and C, elderberries stimulate the immune system and contain complex sugars shown to support faster healing. Dr. Madeleine Mumcuoglu of Hadassah-Hebrew University found that elderberries block the enzyme viruses use to invade healthy cells, preventing infection when taken early or limiting its spread if already sick. Clinical trials have even shown elderberries can reduce recovery time by half or more.

A Simple, Natural Recipe for Elderberry Syrup

Equipment:

  • Quart-size mason jar

Ingredients:

  • 3½ cups water
  • ⅔ cup dried elderberries (available on Amazon)
  • 2 TBSP grated ginger
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • ½ tsp ground cloves
  • 1 cup raw honey (local, if possible)

Instructions:

  1. Pour the water into a medium saucepan and add the elderberries, ginger, cinnamon, and cloves.
  2. Bring to a boil, then uncover and reduce to a simmer for about 30 minutes, or until the liquid has reduced by half.
  3. Remove from heat and let cool until lukewarm.
  4. Mash the berries carefully using a spoon or flat utensil.
  5. Strain through cheesecloth or a fine mesh strainer into a mason jar or bowl, discarding the elderberries.
  6. When the liquid is no longer hot, stir in the honey until fully combined.
  7. Store in the refrigerator and take daily for its immune-boosting properties.

Dosage:

  • Kids: ½–1 teaspoon daily
  • Adults: ½–1 tablespoon daily
If flu symptoms strike, take the normal dose every 2–3 hours until symptoms improve.
Note: Avoid giving honey to children under 2 years old due to the risk of botulism.
